GIVE TO THE SLOCAN VALLEY LEGACY FUND

A gift to the Slocan Valley Legacy Fund offers you an opportunity to make a real difference in perpetuity. We accumulate and prudently invest donated gifts. The annual income from this perpetual nest-egg is distributed back to the community in the form of grants that provide ongoing benefits to the Slocan Valley.

The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.

Add a notation that includes your name and mailing address to receive your tax receipt.  Also, please indicate if the donation is made in memory, or in honour, if that is the case.

How the Legacy Fund Works

The Slocan Valley Legacy Fund is a fund within the Osprey Community Foundation based in Nelson B.C., a registered Canadian Charitable Foundation. The Slocan Valley Legacy Fund is overseen and guided by a board comprised of citizens from across the valley under the auspices of the Slocan Valley Community Legacy Society.

The Osprey Community Foundation invests its funds with the Vancouver Foundation which employs professional fund managers who currently manage some $750 million in assets. The Vancouver Foundation is one of the oldest and the largest Community Foundation in Canada and one of the largest in North America.

Your gift would be made to the Osprey Community Foundation and designated to the Slocan Valley Legacy Fund. Your funds would be invested and held in perpetuity. Each year, the interest on your gift, pooled with the gifts of many other donors, would be granted to worthy charitable groups in the Slocan Valley. The principal is never touched and remains your permanent legacy.

Think of it like growing an apple tree: the tree (the principal) grows with each gift and each year the apples (the interest) are picked and awarded to worthy community organizations.

Tax Savings from Giving

We welcome gifts of cash that will be put to immediate good use and of course these gifts are tax-deductible. We also offer donors the opportunity to give with even greater impact, for example a planned gift such as a gift of life insurance or securities, or a bequest in a will to include a legacy for the Slocan Valley. There can be substantial tax savings with these methods of giving — we would love to talk to you about how such opportunities could apply to your individual situation.

Your gift can take the form of:

  • An outright gift or pledge of cash

  • A bequest in a will

  • Life insurance

  • Stocks, bonds or other securities

  • Real estate or other tangible property

  • Monthly or annual donations

We Know that Every Donor is Unique

We know that you and every donor to the Slocan Valley Legacy Fund are unique, so the best way to start a conversation about your vision for the Valley (a conversation that is completely confidential and with no obligation on your part) is to talk to one of our Board members or Fundraising Committee members. We would love to explore about how the Legacy Fund could support your vision for the future of the Slocan Valley.

It’s Easy to Get Started

Start building your legacy today.

1.  Talk with the right people

Talk with your family, friends, financial advisor, or lawyer. Discuss what you care about and what impact you would like to have in our community. Explore what you might use to create your fund: a gift in your will, a life insurance policy, a gift from your RRSP/RRIF or something else. There are many options. It is important that you get independent financial advice to ensure you are clear on the implications of your giving and the tax benefits.

2.  Call the Slocan Valley Legacy Fund
We’re happy to answer questions about gift types, fund options, and tax implications. With our extensive knowledge of the community, we can help you identify the best way to support the causes you care about. We will work with you, step by step, to ensure your gift meets your vision for making the Slocan Valley a better place.

3.  Update your Will
A well-prepared, up-to-date will is essential to making your wishes known so that your legacy is exactly what you want it to be. There are many good resources for preparing your will including local estate lawyers. The Vancouver Foundation’s website contains a useful document providing will wordings for leaving a bequest to charity and other helpful resources, see: http://vancouverfoundation.ca/donors/legacy. Please ensure your wording states that your gift is to the Osprey Community Foundation, for the Slocan Valley Legacy Fund.

What About Administration Fees?

The Osprey Community Foundation, which manages our fund, charges a small administration fee (currently 0.375% of the market value of our endowment funds) to help cover their administration costs. The Vancouver Foundation also charges management fees (currently 1.17%). In total, annual fees add up to about 1.5% of the value of our endowment and are taken out of the interest earned on the principal.
